The difference between a tent that dies in two seasons and one that lasts a decade is rarely the price tag. It is almost always three habits: how you pitch it, how you dry it, and how you store it. A well-treated budget tent will outlive an abused premium one.

Pitch on a footprint, every time

Most floor failures are abrasion, not tearing. A groundsheet or even a cut piece of Tyvek costs almost nothing and takes the grinding damage from grit and roots instead of your floor. Cut it slightly smaller than the tent footprint so rain does not pool between the layers.

Never pack it wet u2014 and “dry” means really dry

Mildew is the number one tent killer, and it starts within 24u201348 hours of packing a damp tent. If you must break camp wet, unpack the tent the same day at home and hang it until the seams u2014 not just the panels u2014 are dry. Seams hold moisture longest.

Store loose, not compressed

The stuff sack is for transport, not storage. Long-term compression cracks waterproof coatings and permanently creases the fabric. At home, store the tent loosely in a large breathable bag (an old pillowcase works) in a dry room u2014 not a hot attic, not a damp garage floor.

Re-treat before it leaks, not after

When water stops beading on the fly, wash it with a technical fabric cleaner and reapply a DWR spray. Check seam tape once a year; peeling tape is fixable in ten minutes with seam sealer, but only if you catch it early.

Zippers: the cheapest expensive repair

Zippers fail from grit, not use. Brush the coil after sandy or dusty trips and run a graphite pencil along it occasionally. Force is the enemy u2014 if a zipper snags, back it up and clear the fabric instead of pulling harder.
